I discussed my obsession with moving to Europe HERE. However, no matter how many times people ask "Why Italy" the answer isn't exactly logical. At least from your everyday American's perspective. After all we live in the greatest country in the world!
One of my English students asked me: "don't you worry about fitting in?" I laughed briefly then explained that I never felt that I fit in.
Aside from the slight language barrier I felt comfortable in Italy. In fact, I felt complete comfort approaching police and military. I walked up to 3 soldiers holding AK-47 guns in the middle of Piazza Dante and felt completely at ease. They were just so unassuming and chill! And the police officers were even more friendly! I asked for directions on 3 different occasions but didn't feel scared or judged at all. The sight of a patrol car here in the USA gives me chills.
In contrast, when I returned to the US through the Global Entry lane I was welcomed by a border control agent yelling "Where are you going pal?!?!" Yep.
No country is perfect, but I strongly believe there is a place for everyone, even if it's not the place of their birth. My affinity for Italy has been a constant. It never dies. So I will go!
Going forward when I'm asked "Why Italy?" My response shall be... "Why not?"
Let the journey to Italy begin!
